What to do when the shops close on a sleepy Sunday in Salzburg? Get out of town and go adventuring! Welcome to Hallstatt, a quaint historic town in regional Salzburg, which so happens to be home to one of the world’s oldest salt mines (7000 years old in fact). Just a few bus stop away is Dachstein Ice Caves for curious adventurous. As much as I wanted to get out of the heat, I wasn’t quite prepared to brave sub-zero temperatures in my shorts, so I settled for a nice stroll along the lake and deep in the mountainside.
Ps. The salt mine has a few fun surprises inside – slides, underground lakes, a (potentially) claustrophobia-inducing train trip, and a 3000-year-old wooden staircase in its original condition. Who said the countryside was boring?
